Navigation Systems

Mobile navigation has seen dramatic changes since Spring 2004 with the launch of the fully portable TomTom Go. Now it seems that a new portable navigation system is being launched every week! If you're confused call us for our latest recommendations. Remember we only stock units that we have tried and tested ourselves….

We also supply and install the best fixed vehicle navigation systems from VDO, Alpine, Kenwood, Becker and Blaupunkt. From single DIN stereo replacement systems up to the latest touch screen units with full European mapping and integrated traffic information (TMC).

Many customers ask why there is such a price difference between the portable systems and the “installed systems”. The main difference is that the portable systems rely solely on GPS for positioning. Should the signal be blocked by high buildings, trees or a tunnel, then the system is unable to offer accurate directions. Although the “installed systems” use GPS, it is used only to give an approximate position and as a back up.

Instead these systems rely primarily on internal sensors that measure the distance the car has travelled (speed sensor) and the angle of turn (gyrocompass). They then use a process called “map matching” to accurately position the vehicle. Wherever you may be you will always know exactly where you are.
