We weOccasionally, along comes
a project that at first seems impossible, but that with thought,
leads to an end result of which we can feel truly proud.
The owner of this GTC did not want the usual headrest (or
rather seat back) screens in his new GTC. What he wanted
was a single screen mounted between the two seats, in a similar
fashion to the Mercedes factory installation.
We explained that a Mercedes style folding bracket wouldn’t
be possible in a GTC and that, in any event, it would be
out of keeping with the overall appearance of a Bentley.
He then suggested mounting a screen on a simple bracket at
the rear of the centre console, behind the front seat armrests.
That didn’t appeal either. In the end we asked for a couple
of days to consider our options.
After much thought, we decided on a solution that drew inspiration from a navigation
system that was originally developed for a Land Rover Freelander.
This system involved a screen that rose vertically from the
dashboard. By fabricating a housing that would be attached
to the rear part of the GTC centre console, we felt we would
be able to have a screen that could be hidden when not in
use and then rise up vertically for viewing.
The customer was pleased with our
suggestion and we were given the go ahead. As you can see
from the pictures, with the screen in the “closed” position,
there is no real evidence that the car has a rear seat entertainment
system installed. When the system is activated the screen
rises up vertically and then tilts to the correct viewing
angle.
